I still have a few available seats for my Winter Lecture Series. The second lecture, Studio Practice For The Plein Air Painter, takes place on December 8, at 1pm in my Panther Lake Studio.

This series of 3 studio lectures was conceived as a mix of art history, practical methodology, anecdote and speculation. The second lecture will explore the history, meanings and innovations of plein air and studio landscape. It will also present practical methods for resolving landscape paintings, which may have been begun en plein air or in the studio. The lecture will contrast the traditional, i.e. 19th century, approach to painting en plein air with the contemporary plein air movement’s misplaced purism and crass commercialization.

There will also be a discussion of the plein air artist communities that developed in the 19th and early 20th century, and which helped spread what became the first international style.

My own first experiments with plein air date to my late teen years in the 1960s, and have continued ever since. This lecture cannot hope to encapsulate that 50+ years of experience, but it will hopefully demonstrate the impact the aestheticization of the landscape has had on our evolving understanding of our environment.
The three lectures were also conceived as an integrated set, with ideas and histories that dovetail from one lecture to the next, e.g. the history of plein air, in the second lecture, is intimately intertwined with the history of Realism explored in the third.

The lecture will be followed by wine and refreshments, and hopefully some lively discussion.

Dodson’s Fine Jewelers is closing, after 131 years in business. The Spokane Store has been a local fixture, and in the past several years they’ve expanded into fine art sales, providing a spacious gallery in the back of the store and on the upper level.

I’ve had two very successful shows at Dodson’s, in 2015 and 2017, and I regret that I will not be able to have any more. However I’ve sincerely enjoyed working with owners Penn Fix and Debra Schultz. Penn and Debra will be retiring, and I wish them all the best in their new adventures. Maybe they’ll take up plein air painting!

Dodson’s will remain open until sometime in March, and will be selling inventory at up to 70% off. Artwork will be 10% off. This is an opportunity to purchase some truly fine work, both jewelry and art.

Dodson’s Fine Jewelers is located in Spokane at 516 W Riverside Ave, Spokane, WA 99201.
